As we gear up for the upcoming fast, as we prepare as best we can to do without food & drink for 25+ hours, I am once again reminded and in awe of what the proper amount of good, nutritious food and water does for us.

As the fast progresses I am likely to be:  lethargic, sluggish, sleepy, irritable, headache-y. I’ll be sapped of energy. I won’t function well. I will have to curtail my activities and not merely due to the Yom Kippur restrictions placed on us -but because I won’t have the wherewithal to do them. Not physically nor mentally.

Do you know what just struck me as I was writing this? -   the same exact debilitating  effects happen when we eat the WRONG foods and/or too much food.

This is what happens when we are deprived of proper food and water.

Many things have changed over the centuries, but nutrition HASN'T

THREE HEARTY WHOLESOME MEALS A DAY and WATER!

Hashem has supplied us with water and a plethora of appealing, tasty, delectable, highly effective foods to ensure our sustenance and growth and that we are properly nourished and energized so that we can face each day with vim and vigor.  Foods that enable us to not only survive, but thrive and therefore live life to the utmost fullest. To do any less would mean we are falling short of our obligation and duty.

Without Him, I can’t; without “me” He won’t; However, He can’t spoon feed us. It is up to us to actually choose these fine wholesome foods and eat them in the way He intended us to.

Come Wednesday evening I will eagerly dive into a tall glass of water, eat some fruit and a ginormous veggie omelet. My strength will come back to me, my energy level will soar, my irritability will cease. And I will once again be awestruck at what eating the good, nutritious food that Hashem has given to us does for us.

I had no idea, 13+ years ago, which is when I made the decision to use food to my advantage and eat the three hearty healthy meals I was designed and required to,  just how much it would affect my every single living and sleeping moments. It makes you appreciate and enjoy everything - much, much more! The gratitude, and yes - the awe of life!

Wishing you and your loved ones meaningful fast.  Vicki

And now one fabulous recipe using the foods we were intended to eat, in the way they were meant to be eaten.

Salmon with Fresh Pineapple (or Mango) Salsa
2 cups coarsely chopped fresh pineapple
1/2 cup chopped red sweet pepper
1/4 cup finely chopped red onion
3 tablespoon lime juice
1 tablespoon snipped fresh cilantro or chives
1 small fresh jalapeno pepper, seeded and finely chopped
1 1-pound fresh skinless salmon fillet, 1 inch thick
1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1. For salsa, in a medium bowl combine pineapple, sweet pepper, onion, 2 tablespoons of the lime juice, the cilantro, and jalapeno pepper.
  • 2. Cut fish into 5 serving-size pieces. Brush both sides of fish with the remaining lime juice and sprinkle with cumin.
  • 3. Bake in the oven at 350 degrees for about 25 minutes till cooked through. If you like a crusty look, bake for 20 minutes and broil the last 5. Serve the fish, placing the salsa on top of  the fish.
